On January 22 the Taiwanese dessert shop Sweet O'Clock (Instagram: @sweetoclock.tor, Facebook; Sweet O'clock) expanded their menu to include savoury appetizers, snacks, rice dishes and noodle dishes. To celebrate the launch, from January 22 to February 10 Sweet O'Clock will be giving diners who have liked their Facebook page or followed them on Instagram a 15% off discount on their bill (desserts excluded) when they check in at the location.

I was invited to the North York eatery a couple of days before the official launch date for a sneak peek tasting. I wrote about Sweet O'Clock last month and commented on what I personally liked and didn't like from their dessert menu (click here for my blog post) so I'll be doing pretty much the same thing this time for their savoury menu :)
My friend and I started off with wintermelon teas. We both loved our drinks. My friend orders wintermelon every time he sees it on a menu because not a lot of places offer wintermelon. Sweet O'Clock's Signature Tea Selections come in regular size ($4.2) and large size ($4.7).
HERBAL JELLY WINTERMELON TEA ($4.2)
QQ WINTERMELON TEA ($4.2)
There are 25 appetizers, 10 rice dishes, and 6 noodle soups on Sweet O'Clock's new food menu. Here is what we tried:
OXTAIL NOODLE SOUP ($12.99)
JELLYFISH SALAD ($8.99)
TAIWANESE STYLE SOYA BEEF SHANK ($8.99)
TAIWANESE STYLE SOYA INTESTINE ($6.99)
TAIWANESE OYSTER VERMICELLI WITH INTESTINE ($9.99)
JAPANESE UNAGI DON ($12.99)
TAIWANESE STYLE MARINATED COMBINATION ($11.99)
STEAMED GARLIC OYSTER (1 for $3.99)
STEWED STREAKY PORK W/ MARINATED MUSTARD GREENS ($12.99)
TAIWANESE PAN FRIED RICE CAKE WITH OYSTER ($9.99)
STEAMED GARLIC TIGER SHRIMPS ($17.99)
The standouts for me - i.e. dishes that I would order again - are the following:
- Oxtail noodle soup
- Jellyfish salad
- Taiwanese style soya intestine (favourite)
- Japanese unagi don
- Steamed garlic oyster
- Stewed pork with mustard greens (favourite)
The plates not mentioned weren't terrible just that I didn't enjoy them as much as others:
- Soya beef shank: Average, not bad.
- Oyster vermicelli with intestine: Needed more oysters and intestine, the vermicelli was good though.
- Marinated combination plate: My least favourite. Everything on the plate was average at best. Not worth the price in my opinion.
- Pan fried rice cake with oyster: I was hoping for a thicker, softer and fluffier pancake but instead it was flat and rather dry.
- Steamed garlic tiger shrimps: Great dish if you love shrimp but I personally prefer oyster. Also because one order comes with 12 tiger shrimps you better make sure you love shrimp or else it wont be worth $17.99.
MIXED FRUITS SNOWFLAKE ($8.99)
MATCHA SNOWFLAKE ($8.99)
HERBAL JELLY NO. 4 ($6.90)
Taro, red bean, boba
The Mixed Fruits Snowflake was tasty. It's a great dessert for those looking for something that's refreshing with fresh fruits. However, the dessert that stole the show was the Matcha Snowflake. I was in love after the first bite! Even though it's cold out I'l still eat this dessert in a heartbeat. Finely shaved ice with prominent match flavour that's so smooth it immediately melts in your mouth. The red bean and vanilla ice cream were the perfect compliments for it. I would travel to Sweet O'Clock just for the Matcha Snowflake - that's how much I love it. The Herbal Jelly dessert was also delicious 'cause it has everything that I like in it: taro, red bean, boba, and herbal jelly flavoured shaved ice underneath (the scoop of vanilla ice cream was added in extra). What a terrific ending to our meal!
