Post 11: Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ

Gyu-Kaku is a pretty well-known Japanese BBQ chain in the United States. They have numerous locations in California, Chicago, New York, and Hawaii. They have over 700 locations worldwideLike I said in the my previous posts, people in the States really seem to love table top grilling and is definitely more popular there than in Toronto.

After coming back from our SF/Napa Valley/Yosemite road trip, we were yearning for some good Asian food once again. Our family friend took us to Gyu-Kaku at Huntington Beach for their Happy Hour Special.

This particular location is opened for lunch everyday from 11:30am with your choice of BBQ lunch sets, all-you-can-eat courses and lunch time happy-hour.

Anyway, the Happy Hour Special is crazy good!!! Apparently they have a "Happy Hour All Day Every Monday" too according to the sign. It seems like at any time of day at any day of the week, Gyu-Kaku would have a deal going on.

The Happy Hour Specia (Mon-Sun 11:30-6:30pm & 8:30 - Last Call) consists of the following:

BBQ items from $2.95
50% off all appetizers
99 cent beer

Nigori Sake for $7! It was THE first thing I ordered on the menu. I ♥ Nigori Sake! We also ordered several pitchers of Sapporo ($7.45). Pitchers of Budweiser were also available for $4.95.

I tried to keep track of everything we ordered, but honestly, everything came all at once at an amazing speed.  Everyone started eating, putting things on the grill, and drinking, that I couldn't keep up with the pictures after awhile. Below are SOME of the things we ordered.

Fried Cheese Wonton

Gyu-Kaku Salad

Crispy Seaweed with Cream Cheese

Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Fried Calamari

A picture of various things on the grill: Scallops, Garlic Shrimp, the Bacon Wrapped Asparagus...

...Bone-In Kalbi, Corn with Butter (butter is in that tin-foil holder thing).

I'm sure we ordered the Mushroom Medley and the Japanese Sweet Potato but I don't think I had a chance to take pictures of them. By the look of the table, I don't think anybody could resist not eating right away anyway.

With 700 locations worldwide, can't Gyu-Kaku open ONE restaurant in Toronto? That's not asking much, right? Don't be mean! *sigh*
